This is a contractor produced model 1840 that has been converted to percussion ignition. The model 1840 was the final production of flintlocks in US service and was rapidly replaced by the model 1842. Virtually all model 1840s were converted to percussion beginning in the late 1840s. This is an early conversion. These muskets saw extensive service in the Civil War and were eventually replaced by the rifled musket starting in 1862. This musket is in nice condition with all metal being repolished and the stock refinished. Caliber 69 smoothbore we have test fired this musket. The bore has typical mild pitting which does not affect function.
