This is an extremely rare Civil War rifle. Eli Whitney produced a wide variety of Militia rifles just prior to the start of the Civil War. These were sold to State Militias, particularly in the south. This rifle comprises a mix of Enfield parts with 1855 rifle parts. A majority of this particular model was sold to Georgia and Alabama in 1860 and early 1861. This particular rifle has been through a full restoration process including a Hoyt 1-60 7 groove rifled .577 liner. It is equipped with the popular Whitney long range sight which is a replacement. We have test fired this rifle and sighted it in at 50 yards. Very popular with the competition community surviving examples of this type are seldom seen on the market. Normally the lock plate would be marked with Whitney’s name but we could not find even a trace of markings. Apparently some unmarked rifles were shipped. At some point a previous owner applied his initials with brass tacks on the buttstock. Initialed rifles are typical of Southern provenance as the Union Army would not allow it.
