This is an unrestored original pattern 1841 Hall rifle. Essentially it is the standard Hall breach loader configured for percussion ignition instead of flint lock. The Hall rifle is historically significant as its development and production led directly to the concept of interchangeable parts and full assembly line production. Basically, Mr Hall’s revolutionary ideas have become the basis for modern production. This model served both sides in the civil war and was the basis for a major scandal in 1861 as many of these rifles were declared obsolete and literally sold for pennies prior to the start of hostilities in 1861. These rifles were resold to the federal government at an obscene profit netting the owners millions. Congress did a major investigation.
The Hall rifle is in caliber 54. Rifling on this model is present but the bore is dark. There is moderate pitting in the breach area and the stock has numerous dings and dents from service with a few minor grain cracks. The breach seal on the Hall was always horrible and tended to blow a lot of smoke in the face of the user. We cannot recommend firing this rifle because of this. Hall rifles were never made in a large quantity and between the war time use they are relatively rare!
