This is a restored type 1 1855 musket. The first variant of the 1855 had a long range sight and was built in 1857 and 1858. Only small quantities were produced and the Armory developed a new leaf sight that was less expensive in 1858 which was used throughout the rest of the production.
This rifle has decent original rifling which is rare as most of the 1855s saw extensive use throughout the civil war. There is light pitting down the length of the barrel as well as in the bolster area. We had to replace the lock plate door, nose cap and rear sight as they had been removed long ago by a previous owner. We refurbished the Maynard lock with new parts in the feed mechanism. The 1855 had very small production numbers and very few survived in decent condition. This musket has been test fired.
