This BYF code marked (Mauserwerks) was designed in 1938 to replace the venerable P08 Luger, which was complicated and expensive to manufacture, especially mid-war. With military production from 1938-1945, the P38 was the mainstay of German infantry forces, and the first locked-breech DA/SA handgun in common use.
